Flu, COVID, or Strep? How to Tell the Difference

Date

Oct 2026

Feeling sick but not sure what you have?

Flu, COVID-19, and strep throat can cause some similar symptoms, which can make it difficult to tell the difference based on symptoms alone. At Citrus Urgent Care, we can evaluate your symptoms and perform on-site testing for flu, COVID-19, and strep when clinically appropriate.

Flu commonly causes a sudden onset of fever or chills, body aches, fatigue, headache, cough, and sometimes a sore throat.

COVID-19 can also cause fever, cough, sore throat, congestion, fatigue, headache, and body aches. Symptoms can vary considerably from person to person.

Strep throat more commonly causes a sore throat, pain with swallowing, fever, and swollen lymph nodes. Cough and runny nose are less typical of strep throat and may suggest a viral infection instead.

Because symptoms can overlap, testing can help determine what's causing your illness and guide appropriate treatment.
